Vaccine Storage and Management Best Practice

Ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccine stock in your clinic or pharmacy is critical. The following list includes some of the key considerations for vaccine storage and vaccine management in these environments.

• Document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for each stage of vaccine management within your pharmacy or clinic including receipt, storage and use.
• Ensure that staff are trained on your SOPs and that their training is recorded on file.
• Nominate at least two named staff responsible for vaccine management and temperature records.
• Keep Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPCs) on file for all vaccines stored and ensure correct storage temperature (typically +2 °C to +8 °C).
• Use fridges and freezers that are validated for pharmaceutical use – never use domestic models.
• Record min/max/current temperature in all fridges and freezers at daily. Keep these records on file.
• Ensure that your temperature monitoring equipment is accurately calibrated.
• Clearly document procedures for staff to follow in the event of a temperature breach and clearly quarantine stock, while maintaining the cold-chain.
